Trying to pick out the perfect birthday gift? Refreshing your child’s home library? Whatever the reason, we’ve got the book for you! Scholastic, a household name in children’s literature, has created a fantastic list of children’s picture books that every family should own (www.scholastic.com). But how did they choose each book? They polled some of the most well read folks in the industry: teachers! So the next time you’re browsing the children’s book section, consider purchasing a few of these classic titles for children.

If you’re like most parents, potty training can feel overwhelming and a bit anxiety producing. How do I get my child, who has been dependent on diapers since they were born, to transition to the toilet? Will this take a weekend? A week? A month? How do I bolster their self confidence when accidents inevitably occur? And how do I personally navigate this big change?

Don’t despair! Knowing the basics about potty training can help you feel prepared and in control. And believe it or not, conversations about pee and poop should begin when a child is still in diapers. You’ve got lots of time, so no need to panic! Consider this timeline to support your family’s transition to potty training:

At 18 months, begin teaching about pee, poop, and how the body works

Teach relevant vocabulary. This might include pee, poop, toilet (potty), underwear, toilet paper, etc.

Clarify that everyone, grownups and children, pee and poop

Point out when animals are going pee or poop

Talk about the signals your body gives you when you need to pee or poop. This might sound like, “I notice you have gas. I think your body is telling you that you need to poop.”

Praise your child for going poop in their diaper

Avoid describing poop or pee as yucky, stinky, or dirty

Make diaper changing a pleasant experience

Make sure to change your child frequently so that they develop a preference for a dry diaper

At 21 months, begin teaching about the potty and the toilet

Talk to your child about the toilet. Tell them what it’s for (“We go pee and poop in the potty”). Demonstrate this by dumping poop from your child’s diaper into the toilet. Flush.

Talk about the potty chair and the toilet in a positive light. Make your child feel like sitting on the potty is a privilege.

Have your child watch toilet trained children use the potty (older siblings are great for this).

Buy a floor level potty chair. This kind of chair lets the child’s feet touch the floor, allowing them to bear down and to get on and off the potty at will. Have your child pick out their own potty chair. They can name it and decorate it.

Have your child sit on the potty chair for fun. Encourage your child to sit on it while eating a snack, playing a game, or reading a book. You want your child to develop a sense of ownership. Toilet training should not begin until the child feels positively about their chair.

Transition the potty chair into the bathroom. Have your child sit on the potty with a bare bottom while you are using the toilet. Don’t allow diapers or pull ups in the potty. Establish that the bathroom as a place where we exclusively poop and pee in the toilet.

At 2 years of age, begin using teaching aids

Check out some toilet training books from your local library. Watch toilet training videos.

Encourage your child to pretend they are potty training their stuffed animals or baby doll.

Present underwear as something very special. Keep their new underwear in a place where they can always see it.

Potty training doesn’t have to be an unpleasant or scary experience. In fact, it can be a great opportunity for you to bond with your child. Embark on the potty training adventure together. You’ll get through it in no time!
The post Toilet Training Steps By Age first appeared on Bright Beginnings Preschool.

Picky eaters: chances are, you’ve got one. Preschoolers are selective about the foods they will and won’t eat. This can be concerning for parents. We always want to make sure our children are eating right. Easier said than done! Try using these tips to get your preschooler to eat healthier…and to stop them from feeding the dog under the dinner table!

Keep your options healthy

It’s much easier to eat a healthy diet when we only provide healthy choices at home. Stock up on fresh fruit, vegetables, beans and whole grains. Prepare them ahead of time so that you can grab them for a quick snack. Consider cucumber slices, ants on a log, carrot sticks, and fresh fruit as potential grab-and-go options.

      2. Make eating healthy fun

Use a fun cookie cutter to bump up the “fun factor” while still eating healthy! Try cutting your child’s sandwich into a dinosaur or the shape of a star. Make faces or other designs on your child’s healthy food. Consider using raisins for eyes and an orange slice for a big smile!

      3. Just dip it

Fruits and veggies are much more appealing to a child when they’re accompanied by delicious dip! Try peanut butter, yogurt dip, bean dip, almond butter, or hummus. They’re sure to spice up any snack!

     4. Don’t talk smack about veggies

You children pay attention to everything you do. If you are grossed out by broccoli, your children will be, too. Try serving veggies that you love to encourage healthy eating.

    5. Be a role model

Your children emulate everything that you do, so set a great example when it comes to healthy eating. Let your children see you fill your plate with greens. They will be excited to try them, too.

   6. Try, try again

It’s not at all uncommon for children to refuse food 10-to-12 times before they come to enjoy it. They are particular about texture, taste, and consistency. Keep serving these foods. They might just like it!

  7. No thank you bite

Have a “No Thank You Bite” rule in your home. Serve your child a nutritious new food. They can take one bite and say “no thank you” if they don’t like it. Try again next time!

  8. Snazzy snacks

Children need snacks. In fact, they need them roughly every 3 to 4 hours. Have healthy snacks at the ready! Cheese sticks and yogurt work well.

   9. Be colorful

The more color on the plate, the more enticing the meal! Try serving colorful fruits and vegetables, such as red tomato, orange carrot, and purple beets. Make a design or pattern!

10. Sneaky Greens

If all else fails, try hiding your child’s greens in a tasty smoothie or casserole. Soon they’ll be open to these foods, but there’s no shame in disguising their “grow food” in a tasty surprise in the meantime.

  11. Eat your “Grow Food” first

This one’s pretty simple. No sweets before eating your healthy food!

  12. Shop, cook, and eat together

Go to the grocery store together and let your child pick out some of their own food. Work with gadgets in the kitchen, and eat your meals together as a family. The more ownership your child (and family) feels over their meal, the more they’ll enjoy it!

  13. Persistence

And finally, above all, stay positive. Persist! Your child will learn to love nutritious food and there’s so much you can do to support them. When the going gets tough, don’t give up! It’s only a matter of time before they’re eating healthy foods all on their own.
The post 13 Secrets To Get Your Preschooler to Eat Healthier first appeared on Bright Beginnings Preschool.

Anti Anxiety Plants For Your Household

If you thought that plants were just something for your back garden, then you were wrong! There are many plants that have numerous health benefits such as the ability to reduce ailments, eradicate headaches as well as relieve stress. If you happen to spend a lot of your day indoors, the air quality that you are surrounded by may have a negative effect on your health. Poor air quality contains toxins, which can affect allergies, inflammation, stress, asthma and anxiety. The good news is that there are a few ways that you can make your indoor air quality better. One of the ways is to invest in some indoor houseplants. We will now take a look at the kinds of plants that you can buy which have anti-anxiety benefits.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is usually used as a herbal remedy. It is known to be very effective in reducing inflammation, soothing skin that has been sunburnt as well as reducing scars. Aloe Vera is also renowned for being one of the best plants for purifying the air. This is reason why it is the ideal choice if you wish to improve the air quality within your home or workplace. Aloe Vera is also beneficial when it comes to promoting a good night sleep, which we know is crucial factor if we want to eradicate our body and mind of anxiety and stress.

Lavender

Lavender is usually used as an essential oil and is part of the mint family. Apart from the beautiful scent that lavender gives off, it has also been proven to reduce anxiety and stress levels. Lavender can also promote sleep, calm babies that are restless as well as reduce your heart rate.

Gerbera

Another very effective air purifier, this plant can help to promote a stress free ambience and good quality sleep. This plant requires well-drained soil and plenty of light for it to thrive.

English Ivy Plant

Areca Palm

This is another well-known plant if you wish to purify the air within your home or office. The Areca Palm can remove toxins from within the air including benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene. When we breathe in cleaner air, our mental and physical states are calmer and therefore our blood pressure reduces and symptoms related to anxiety also reduce. As long as you don’t overwater this plant it is very easy to look after.

The fragrance that Jasmine releases not only appeals to our senses, it can also help to promote quality sleep. If you don’t sleep well you could end up with symptoms such as trouble coping with change, difficulty in controlling emotions, difficulty in making decisions and trouble solving problems. Ultimately, sleep is a very important factor when it comes to our mental and physical health.

Chrysanthemum

A beautiful and vivid plant that’s not only looks attractive but also can reduce symptoms related to anxiety and improve air quality. When consumed in tea it can relax our bodies and help to reduce the symptoms related to anxiety, as it can have a calming effect on the nervous system.

Did you know the average good old #2 pencil is 7.5 inches long and contains graphite, not lead? And among its’ attributes, besides being used for filling in those stressful standardized test bubbles (we know you remember the SAT!) and for teaching a six year old traditional manuscript and cursive the average pencil can write 45,000 words and draw a line 35 miles long! Of course, at preschool, we’re all about offering all kinds of writing tools to our little ones to use when embarking on literacy including markers, crayons, chalk, charcoal and of course pencils!

So smitten are we with pencils that we’re supporting Adam Braun and his Global endeavor as articulated in his book, ‘The Promise of a Pencil’ to help build schools for children from poor communities. His personal story of going from a fancy Ivy League education (Brown) to a high powered consulting position, and being inspired in between by travel through India made us smile and cry when we heard him speak at a fantastic Early Childhood conference hosted by our favorite consultants, Hinge Brokers as part of their annual Shift conference last February in San Diego. Along with our owner, Kathe Petchel, Vice President of Operations, Molly Petchel, Regional Director, Alison Casey and Mill Creek Director, Brooklyn Stanley we were wowed by Adam’s aha moment which came when he asked a little boy what he wanted most in the world, and the reply was “ a pencil.” Wow- we are all so fortunate and we know it. After meeting Adam and reading his book, we were even more inspired to follow his lead of a supporting a purpose.

So, starting July 1, 2018, we join Hinge Brokers and Hinge Consultants in supporting ‘The Promise of a Pencil’ by donating $50.00 of each registration and re-registration fee. We’re so happy to extend our continued local community support to the Global Community and hope you’ll join us too. For more information, please go to pencilsofpromise.org and adambraun.com or pick up his book New York Times bestseller for an inspiring read. ‘The Promise of a Pencil- How an Ordinary Person can Create Extraordinary Change.’

So many women ask the same thing throughout pregnancy: What should I be eating to give my child the most nutrients to grow and give me the most energy to support my baby? Here we have a list of the top things to eat while pregnant (although every item on this list is great for people who aren’t pregnant too!)

Eggs

Eggs are essential in any pregnancy diet. Besides the benefits of pure protein they give you folate, iro and something called choline. Choline which is essential to fetal brain development and also reduces the risk of neural tube defects (like spina bifida.) In order to reap the benefit of choline you will have to eat the egg yolk of the egg- so get ready to add eggs benedict and poached eggs! (Just remember try to to order egg whites!)

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes aren’t just for the holidays- incorporating sweet potatoes into your diet will give you plenty of fiber, vitamin B6, iron, potassium, copper and beta-carotene. Beta-Carotene is an antioxidant that your body converts into Vitamin A. Vitamin A is vital in your baby’s bone, skin and eye development. Try baking a sweet potatoes with butter and agave on top for a delicious dinner side. (Yummy for you and healthy for baby!)

Fun Fact: Did you know that sweet potatoes have more potassium than bananas, and much less sugar?

Plain Yogurt

Did you know that plain yogurt has more calcium in it than milk? If that didn’t make it pregnancy approved it also provides bone building nutrients that include zinc, vitamin B and proteins. Eating plain yogurt is important for keeping your own bones and teeth healthy but also helps your little one develop his, too! Plain yogurt is also fantastic in supporting a healthy gut- with plenty of good bacteria to support your immune system. It is also thought that a mothers bacteria levels can affect the growing fetus from the beginning stages of pregnancy.

Fun Fact: Did you know that moms should get at least 1,000 mg of calcium a day while pregnant? This helps reduce the risk of preterm deliveries and low birth weight.

Salmon

Salmon is an easy and delicious way to get all of the omega-3 fatty acids and proteins that you and your baby need. The fatty acids in salmon are directly related to helping your baby’s brain develop. Salmon is a good fish to eat while pregnant because it is low in mercury- just be sure that you only 2-3 servings a week.

Did you know that newborns who are born with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids tend to have more advances motor skills, higher IQ’s and a better chance of having neurological issues later in their life?

Fresh Oranges

Obviously, oranges are a great source of Vitamin C which is vital in keeping your immune system strong while you carry your little one to term. Oranges are also 90% water so they are a great option for giving you nutrients as well as hydration. Try making your own orange juice to avoid all of the extra sugars and preservative that manufacturers put in their orange juice to give it a longer shelf life.

Spinach

Spinach is the way to go if you are looking to best the best bang for your buck since it provides maximum micronutrient density per calorie. 1 cup of spinach ensures more than your daily requirement of vitamin A and K and folate. Spinach is rich in magnesium, iron and calcium. Spinach is also a incredibly versatile veggie- make a spinach salad , put it as a substitute for lettuce on your sandwich or simple sauté some spinach with some avocado oil and fresh lemon.

Legumes

The Legume group includes lentils, peas, chickpeas, beans, soybeans and peanuts. Legumes are nutrient dense and provide calcium, levels fiber, protein, iron and folate (B9). This group is fantastic for vegetarians mamas since it is so important for your body to get proteins. If you are eating peanuts be sure you eat them raw and unsalted for the maximum health benefits for you and your child.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a fantastic option for a healthy and satisfying complex carbohydrate. Oatmeal is full of folic acid, iron, and fiber to keep you going! Oatmeal helps keep you regular and give you the dose of energy you need to start your day. Since oatmeal is a complex carb (as opposed to simple carbs) it takes time for your body to break down and digest which helps keep your blood sugar levels normal. The folic acid helps your baby’s brain and nervous system develop. Make hot oatmeal with butter and a little honey on top or try overnight oats where you put equal parts rolled oats and freshly squeezed apple juice in a Mason jar and leave covered overnight in your fridge. Then in the morning add fruit, nuts, chia seeds and a little honey or agave. You can also use oat flour as a replacement for all-purpose flour when baking cookies, pancakes, bread, muffins etc.

Tips to Implement an Early Bed Time

While all of this sounds good in theory, your kids may not be a fan of an early bedtime (especially if they are used to staying up late.) So, be sure to follow some of these helpful tips:

Bump Up Their Bedtimes Slowly, start to bump up their bedtime by 15 minute increments. At first, they aren’t likely to notice the change. But, by the time they get to bed significantly earlier, they’ll be used to the time change.

Wake Them Up Early on Purpose Some kids need a bit of a nudge to get up and going-especially school aged children. If you wake them around 6 am, they will be more tired toward the end of the day and will be ready to turn in earlier. Plus, going to bed and rising early just promotes healthier habits and produces more productive individuals in society later in life.

Go Screen-Free Many kids have a difficult time falling asleep early because they get over stimulated with the television, computer, or other electronic devices. Make it a point to cut out screen time after 5:30 p.m. In fact, it has been proven that just two hours of screen time right before bed is enough to lower levels of melatonin which in turn decreases your ability to fall asleep. Curl up with a good book or a board game instead!

Increase Their Activity Level Take a walk as a family after dinner. Sign your child up for a physical sport after school. Allow your toddler to have an evening play date-do something that truly tires your kids out so they are ready to hit the sack sooner and will be able to fall asleep with ease.

Say No To Sugar Sugar certainly peps kids up. And, this is the last thing you want before implementing an early bed time. Go sugar-free around and after dinner. Don’t forget to watch their afternoon snacks too! Remember that it may not be traditional desserts like brownies and ice cream that are keeping your child up- it may be the cereal that they are having as a bedtime snack before bed.

Great a Routine Most of the time this is the hardest part for parents-the process of actually getting your child and you’re entire family (including you, mom and dad!) on a new routine. Remember- it takes 21 days to form a habit. It most likely will be a struggle at first but if you can power through the first 21 days you will have a healthier and much happier child.

Track Their Sleep If you are seeing that your child is having trouble getting a full night’s rest or is having meltdowns during the the day, try tracking their sleep and making notes of their daily routines. Chances are tweaking your routine and the knowledge of how restful their nights are will be incredibly helpful.

The bottom line is that when your child goes to bed early, their physical, social, and emotional health is impacted in a positive way. So, what are you waiting for?

Why You Should Encourage Screen Free Play-Can You Do It For a Week?

Are you tired of trying to get your kids’ attention because their face is always buried in their phone, computer, video game, or tablet? If so, you don’t have to play second fiddle to a screen. Remember when you were a child and how much time you spent engaging with your peers. Do you remember the amount of time you spent outside playing the in yard? You probably weren’t glued to a screen- at least not until much later in your life. If you’re struggling to get your kids to answer you when you ask a question, if you are experiencing tantrums or zombie-like behavior it’s time to show technology who’s boss. Read on to learn why you should encourage screen-free play and take on a week-long challenge to see if you notice a difference in your family’s quality time together.

Reasons To Go Screen Free

1. It puts their minds at rest

Believe it or not Adrenaline and dopamine are released in the brain with screen use. This can really affect a developing brain. Your child may seem addicted to technology and experience panic when it’s taken away from them. If this is the case, it’s time to cut back, and give them a rest. Never allow your child to go on technology before bed, since the release of chemicals within the brain that could affect their sleep.

2. It helps unify your family

When you remove technology, it forces a family to talk to one another. It helps promote engaging conversations, establish stronger connections, and it helps keep everyone focused on things that really matter within a family unit.

3. It helps kids develop unique interests

What kid doesn’t love video games, youtube and their favorite television shows? When kids only have this to play with, they get cheated out of realizing their talents or other unique interests. Kids don’t get the opportunity to daydream, think critically, explore outdoors, read, or invent anything!

4. It helps promote real play

Kids’ idea of play involves the use of a character, rather than a real friend. They think pushing buttons is “playing” and they are really missing out on interacting with others through dramatic play, sports, board games, and even building with blocks and other items, which requires thought, skill, and imagination. Video games and technology apps are designed to “do” things for the kids without allowing them to put in a lot of effort, unlike “real” play, which they need.

5. It helps to teach them what is really important in life.

When kids don’t have technology, they are forced to think on their feet, ponder things quietly on their own, and understand their current situation and position in life. This forces them to think about others, to be more sympathetic, caring, giving, respectful, and responsible.

If these five reasons sound tempting to you, going technology-free for the week is easy. You simply give your child a prompt to put all their items in a box, and direct them to not ask for them for an entire week. This can be difficult for younger children, since they need to find other forms of entertainment, so be sure to have plenty of non-technology items available for them to utilize (board games, art projects, books to read, cooking projects and activities to do together like walk the dog.) Also, take this opportunity to spend lots of time together as a family, especially outdoors.

Going screen free teaches your kids a valuable lesson and is beneficial to even you, Mom and Dad!. Believe it or not your kids won’t miss what they don’t have. So, while going screen-free may be difficult the first day or two, by the end of the week their reset button will be pushed and you’ll have a much happier and engaged family!

How to Encourage A Shy Child To Socialize

Some children will walk right up to a stranger and hug them, others will wave and smile and some will hide behind their parents. Every child is different, and they each need to be nurtured, validated and approached in their own way. If your little one is ultra-shy, here are some tips and tricks to help them ease out of their shell.

Immerse Them Around Others

A great way for children to be more comfortable with others is to be around others. And, this takes practice. Sign up for a parent-child class so they can get used to being around kids and adults in your presence. Once they become a bit more comfortable with this, sign them up for music lessons or any other activities that are one-one-one, but with an adult (no kids just yet). Finally, once you notice they are getting comfortable with being without you in public, get them involved in a team sport or activity that doesn’t put the focus solely on them. In a team setting, your child will learn how to work and speak with others, and will also have lots of children to observe and learn from socially, emotionally, and physically.

Enroll Them In A Quality Preschool Program

There are so many benefits for your family being enrolled in a preschool and one of the top on the list is that they get an opportunity to socialize and interact with other children their own age 5 days a week. At Bright Beginnings Preschool, we often see children who are very shy when they first enroll. It is incredible to watch the transformation that takes place between the first day of school and the coming weeks. Often times parents are surprised to hear that their child was chatting with others and making new friends shortly after being dropped off for the first time. Preschool is such a confidence and independence booster for children!

Prompt

For shy kids, walking into a public place, like an ice cream shop or a grocery store; could really make them feel uncomfortable. It’s filled with people they don’t know and spaces could feel overwhelming to them. So, a few minutes before pulling up to your destination, remind them that they are about to go inside and start listing some things they’ll encounter. Review your expectations if a stranger pays your child a compliment or greets them (you expect them to smile, wave, or say hello-just start with one, but all three would be an added bonus!)

Don’t Call Them Shy

News flash-shy kids know they are shy. They are usually very smart, self-aware, and cautious. They can embarrass easily. So, if you outwardly tell a stranger that your child is shy in front of them, it will make them even shyer and feel uncomfortable. You don’t have to make excuses or comments for your child’s behavior in the presence of strangers. If your child acts withdrawn, utilize prompts in an effort to get them to interact with others.

Be a Role Model

When your child sees that you are happy, confidence, friendly, and outgoing, they will start to absorb these behaviors. Kids learn from their environment. So, if their first reaction is to withdrawal from a stranger or friend, you can step in, take lead, and show your kiddo how it’s done!

Listen More

In some situations, kids become shy because their parents can tend to overpower them. They do all the talking for them and can be overly assertive. So, the natural reaction of a child is to sit back and remain quiet because they don’t need to speak as much for themselves. Allow your child plenty of time to speak and express themselves in front of you. Remain poised and pensive, so your kids know you hear them and are processing what they are telling you.

What is most important is that you don’t push too hard when trying these tips. Each child is different and not every child is or should be the most outgoing student in their class. What is important is that they are challenged to go outside of their comfort zone to challenge themselves.

What to Pack for a Family Beach Trip

There’s nothing more fun than packing up your car and heading to the beach with your family on a hot, summer day- right? Ok, let’s be real-there’s probably nothing more stressful. You not only have to make sure the kids are entertained for hours on end (“Mom, are we there yet?!”) and you also have to make sure you have everything you need so you can set your beach day up for success. Not sure how to make this happen? Read on to learn about some items you should pack!

Sunscreen

A waterproof, high SPF, spray on version (in bulk) is what you need to bring with you. Try buying it at Costco or Sam’s Club so there is plenty. This way, everyone can have fun without being as red as a lobster.

Quarters and Cash

This is an obvious one but a lot of people are so used to just carrying their credit and debit cards that they forget about good old fashioned quarters and dollars for parking. Be sure to get a few rolls of quarters and dollar bills before you head to the beach.

Cooler And Beach Bag In One

Many beach companies are getting into the spirt of designing multi-functional beach gear. A favorite among moms is the cooler beach bag. You can a mesh beach bag on top to carry all your essentials, and a zippered portion on the bottom, which is insulated. So, you can fill it up with drinks, snacks, and sandwiches, and it will stay nice and cool! Plus, it’s one less thing to carry! We love this one from Amazon.

Extra Quart anf Gallon Zip Lock Bags

While everyone knows the risks of brining their phones and camera’s to the beach, not everyone prepares with ziplock bags. Bring extra and don’t forget to put your phone and keys in the plastic bag!

Beach Chairs with Umbrellas

Beach chairs don’t have to be big and bulky, but they should keep you elevated off the sand, and offer ample shade when you need a break from the sun. Buy chairs that have built in umbrellas. They are compact, the umbrellas fold down easily, and there’s a size available for every member of your family.

Baby Beach Tent

While baby beach tents aren’t totally necessary, once you use this one you will be hooked! It is also nice to bring a large family tent like this one to enjoy.

Wet Brush

Wet brushes are a favorite these days. Haven’t heard of them? You should give them a try. They are the best at getting out hair tangles. This one from Amazon is great. But you can also get these at your local CVS, Walgreen and most larger grocery stores.

Beach Toys

Kids love to get their hands in the sand. Keep them engaged with plenty of sand toys. In addition to the beloved favorites like the pail, shovel, and castle molds; why not pick up something new, like an ice cream scooper and cones to serve sand-cream? Or, you could put some food coloring in spray bottles, so your kids can actually add some color to their creations. If it keeps them busy then your mission has been accomplished!

Battery Operated Fan

When going to the beach with an infant or toddler it is especially important that they stay comfortable- and able to stay on their routine for their naps! Buy a fan like this one to accommodate your child.

Sand-proof Mat

Your family deserves a space to sprawl out and enjoy their lunch or some reading, without being covered in sand. Choose a mat that is sand resistant, meaning the sand rolls right off of it. These padded mats aren’t just easy to clean, but are ultra-comfortable and absorbent, so they actually double as towels if kiddos are damp from the ocean.

Cozy Beach Towels

Plan on a towel for every family member. And, a rule of thumb should be that if you can walk, you can carry your own towel. Some towels are designed with special carrying cases, straps, or that have zippered compartments, so you can keep your keys, phone, or money in it; eliminating a need for a purse. Some also have built in pillows for beach goers who love to sprawl out and soak up rays.

Dry Off Beach Towels

Didn’t see this one coming? Neither do most people. Pack a few extra towels for when you are wrapping up at the end of the day that won’t be all sandy.

Wipes and Paper Towels

Even if you don’t have an infant- wipes are a necessity for any parent (or person!) Wipes are great for before and after eating lunch on the beach. And you can never have too many paper towels!

Cornstarch

Cornstarch is fantastic way to get sand off of legs and bodies. Rub a little bit on the legs and feet, and the sand will wipe right off. Don’t forget- baby powder will work too!

These six items are essential for a successful beach day. There are tons of items waiting to be scooped up in stores and online that are not just easy to pack; but are also easy to carry. Be sure you check them out before embarking on your next beach vacay!
The post What to Pack for a Family Beach Trip first appeared on Bright Beginnings Preschool.

Benefits Of An Early Bed Time

You may have that friend who puts her kids down to sleep by 7:00pm each night. Often times you think it’s slightly strange, while other times you feel slightly envious. Why does she do that (and more importantly, how does she do it?) There are so actually numerous benefits of putting kids down early. Read on to learn about them, so you can start implementing these with your child today!

1.) Healthier Overall

There is research that supports that children with later bedtimes are at a higher risk for delays and deficits in the areas of language, motor coordination, and social skills. Lower BMI

2.) Lower BMI

Additional studies show that children who go to bed later have poorer eating habits and a higher body mass index. This is usually because they eat dinner later or are snacking while stay up. This significantly has an overall impact on your child later in life by setting him or her up to have lifelong unhealthy eating habits.

3.) Increases Alertness

When school aged children go to bed earlier, they are more alert in school the next morning and are more likely to perform better.

4.) Emotionally Stable

Some studies show that children who go to bed early (8 or before) are more emotionally stable in the long run when they get a solid night’s sleep. According to Science Daily, “Children who experience inadequate or disrupted sleep are more likely to develop depression and anxiety disorders later in life.”

5.) Sustainable Energy

In addition to waking up and being more emotionally stable, children also have more energy though out their day. This helps them actively participate in school activities and excel in physical, after school events like sports and clubs.

6.) Improves School Performance

According to a study by the National Sleep Foundation of 1,000 children and preadolescents, researchers tracked children’s sleep and school day performance. They found that ‘poor sleepers’ (children who had a hard time falling asleep and woke up during the night at least once) were significantly more likely to have trouble performing at school.

7.) Sleep Promotes Growth

Have you ever woken up in the morning and swear that your child as grown overnight? You aren’t alone! According to the Director of Sleep Medicine at the Children’s National Medical Center, Judith Owens, M.D., “Growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep.” It seems as though Mother Nature has protected our little ones to promote growth hormone because infants spend about half of their time in this deep sleep! In fact, Italian researchers have concluded that children with less levels of growth hormone sleep less deeply than average children do.

8.) Sleep Helps Fight Germs

When your child sleeps they create proteins called cytokines that the body uses and depends on to beat infection, stress and illness. When your child does not get the right amount of sleep it impacts the number of cytokines your body has to fight illnesses. Yet another reason to get your kiddo to bed early!

Checklist for Your Hospital Bag

If your due date is right around the corner, it’s time to start packing your hospital adventure into mommy-hood. As you can probably guess, most first time moms seriously over pack their bag. The hospital provides many of the necessities that you need for your stay. These items include mesh underwear, postpartum pads, blankets and pillows, hospital gowns, baby blankets, and a compression band for c-sections. Here are some items that you do need to pack for your stay:

1.) Toiletries

Bring some of the comforts from home to the hospital to help you look and feel your best. Bring travel sized toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and face wash. Some women bring one razor, and they pack a makeup item or two like mascara or foundation. Bring a hair dryer and some hair ties to pull back your hair.

2.) Button Down Pajamas (3 sets)

Button down pajamas are important to pack, especially if you’re trying to nurse. They allow for easy access and aren’t too constricting in case you’ve had a c-section. You’ll bleed quite heavily as well after delivery (even if you’ve had a c-section), so you should be sure you have at least 3 pairs in case you bleed through a set.

3.) Nursing Bra

It’s wise to bring a nursing bra to the hospital. It allows you to test it out and get help from a lactation specialist. It also keeps your breasts comfortable and compressed while you sit and sleep.

4.) Going Home Clothes

Since you’ll be wearing pajamas and have a hospital gown, there won’t be much need for clothes. You should bring an outfit that is comfortable to wear home. Choose something stretchy, like yoga pants, since your belly won’t go down yet; and a nursing top that allows for easy access and is generally soft and comfortable.

5.) Baby Outfit

Your baby will be wrapped up like a burrito for the duration of your stay, so there really isn’t a need to bring clothing for them. You will want to bring an outfit for the car ride home, since they’ll be making their debut to the world. If it’s winter, be sure to pack a hat, baby mittens, and a few layers so they stay warm. You can also bring a blanket to drape over top of them as you dart in and out from the car to your house.

6.) Baby Carrier

A carrier allows you to safely travel with your baby. It cradles them in the hospital and snaps into a compatible car seat base.

7.) Slippers and a Cozy Robe

Non-slip socks are provided by the hospital, but many moms don’t like walking around their room or halls wearing these items and then sliding back into bed. So, a great pair of slippers will allow you to mosey around without feeling icky about getting back into bed. Remember that hospitals can be a little drafty so don’t forget a comfortable robe!

8.) Something You Love

Your baby is going to sleep most of the time. And, when you’re in between visitors, things can get pretty boring. When you get tired of television, it’s nice to have something else to turn to. Pack your lap top, a new book, some magazines, stuff to crochet-whatever makes you happy! It’s important to realize right from the get go that while you may be a new mom, you can and should do things that make you happy.

Make sure you’re ready to jet to the hospital on a moment’s notice. These eight items will ensure you’re prepared for anything and everything.

6 Benefits Of Preschoolers Going Barefoot

If you’ve ever screamed, “Put your shoes on” to your child, or absolutely forbid them from taking their shoes or socks off at the playground like some of their friends were doing, you’re not alone. There are many parents around the globe who are convinced that shoes on at all times are a must. But, on the flip side, there are also many parents who do the total opposite, and take their kids’ shoes off for them. So what’s the big deal about being barefoot? Some may argue that kids can pick up germs, get infections, or even physically injure their piggy toes. But, many parents just aren’t buying it and are letting their kids’ feet run free. Read on to learn why this may not be so bad and just maybe consider allowing your little ones to have a different experience outdoors.

Reason 1- Glass Isn’t Every Where

Unless you live directly in the city, it’s pretty unlikely that shattered glass is scattered across a field or pasture-especially in your own yard. So, there isn’t as much danger as the stigma suggests. Plus, when your kids run around barefoot, it calluses their feet up a bit, making them much tougher so in the instance that they do step on something, they’re less likely to get hurt.

Reason 2- They Aren’t Likely to Pick up An Illness

Believe it or not, but going barefoot does not mean your child will hands down pick up an illness or disease for that matter. The skin is designed to keep pathogens out, and your child is much more likely to pick up an illness using their hands more than their feet since they don’t put any part of their feet in their mouth. If you think about it, shoes actually create an opportunity for illness by trapping bacteria or fungus due to all the darkness and moisture occurring in their kicks.

Reason 3- It’s a Freeing Experience

Think back to a time that you walked barefoot on grass. It’s a pretty freeing experience. And, kids need that. Their daily routine can be filled with formalities and sometimes kids need to learn how to have some good old fashioned fun-and just be a kid.

Reason 4- It Exposes Them to Different Textures

Often times, kids don’t experience all the textures they need to. By exploring a wide variety of textures, kids become comfortable with all kinds of sensations and consistencies-especially during the eating process. So, if you want a less picky eater, get their shoes off outside and encourage them to frolic in the grass and dip their toes in the sand.

Reason 5- It Builds Strength and Supports Balance

Think about yoga-how often do you see its participants wearing shoes? Yoga is all about flexibility and balance. So, when your kids go barefoot, they don’t just build up a tough ness to their tootsies, their feet become stronger, better balanced, and more like tools which help them run, climb, and jump. In addition, going shoeless also allows the ankle to learn how to stabilize. This helps prevent injuries, prevent falls, and keep their balance. So, if your child is a bit clumsy, indulge them in some shoeless therapy each day!

All kids need to experience being barefoot from time to time. Whether you’re totally on board with this or not, encourage your kids to give it a go. Just be sure to scan their immediate environment to ensure its safe and let them explore the world around them organically for a bit! They have nothing to lose, but everything to gain.
The post Benefits Of Children Going Barefoot first appeared on Bright Beginnings Preschool.

Encouraging Screen Free Play- Can You Do It For a Week?

Are you tired of trying to get your kids’ attention because their face is always buried in their phone, computer, video game, or tablet? If so, you don’t have to play second fiddle to a screen. Remember, you are the boss, not that piece of plastic. So, if you’re struggling to get your kids to answer you when you pose a question, if you are experiencing tantrums, zombie-like behavior, or a general sense of laziness in your household, it’s time to show technology (and your kids) who’s boss. Read on to learn why you should encourage screen-free play, and take on a week-long challenge to see if you notice a difference and if your kids will even miss it!

Taking away technology does the following:

1. It puts their minds at rest

Believe it or not, but Adrenaline and dopamine are released in the brain with screen use. This can really affect a developing brain. Your child may seem addicted to technology, and experience panic when it’s taken away from them. If this is the case, it’s time to cut back, and give them a rest. Never allow your child to go on technology before bed, since the release of chemicals within the brain could also affect their sleep.

2. It helps unify your family

When you remove technology, it forces a family to talk to one another. It helps promote engaging conversations, establish stronger connections, and it helps keep everyone focused on things that really matter within a family unit.

3. It helps kids develop unique interests

What kid doesn’t love video games or technology?

You simply give your child a prompt to put all their items in a box and direct them to not ask for them for an entire week. This can be difficult for younger children, since they need to find other forms of entertainment, so be sure to have plenty of non-technology items available for them to utilize. Also, take this opportunity to plan plenty of family activities together (board games, cooking projects, picnics, outings like mini golf or an evening at the bookstore!) – especially try to emphasize outdoor activities too!

Going screen free teaches your kids a valuable lessons and believe it or not; your kids won’t miss what they don’t have. So, while going screen-free may be difficult the first day or two, by the end of the week; (Remember the key is to keep them busy at first!) their reset button will be pushed and they’ll have a better understanding of a balanced life.

A baby’s cry is so hard to hear. When you can’t seem to get your little one to calm down, try these easy these tips for your infant!

Tip #1-Swaddle

Many parents think that a swaddle is only to be used overnight. This couldn’t be further from the truth. A swaddle provides a baby with a sense of security and warmth, which creates a calming effect. If you notice your baby is prone to lots of crying spells throughout their day, keep them swaddled. There are several ways to wrap a swaddle (learn which your baby prefers), and some swaddles come in a sack-style, so they are easy to place and transport your baby in

Tip #2-Hold Them on Their Belly

This sounds strange, but many babies tend to calm down when they are held in a different way. Hold out one of your forearms (palm facing up), and place your baby across it while holding on firmly to it with your other hand. Slowly float them through the air, move side to side, or simply stand still so they can enjoy their new perspective of the world (or work out that batch of gas if that’s what’s making them upset).

Tip #3-Turn to the Pacifier

If your child isn’t hungry when crying, they may need to satisfy their sucking sensation. That’s where a pacifier comes in. After all, it’s called a pacifier for a reason. There is nothing wrong with promoting a calming agent like this. Some parents feel their child ends up relying on it too much, while others swear by it. Using one is totally your preference, but it does have an immediate calming effect, especially before nap or being put down for the night.

Tip #4-Add Background Noise

If you run a sound machine, your baby may become distracted and pleased with calming, repetitive sounds. This not only takes your baby’s mind off their discontent, but provides them with a welcome dose of noise, since they were used to being in your noisy, muffled womb!

Tip #5-Try Gripe Water

Gripe water is natural and is a favorite remedy of new moms. The ingredients soothe a gassy stomach and provide a calming effect. This is helpful if your baby is gulping down way too much air as they cry, if they suffer from acid reflux, or if they get hit with lots of gas spells, which is very painful.

Tip #6-Put Them on the Floor

It’s frustrating when your baby cries because you have no idea what’s upsetting them and what they need sometimes. It could be something as simple as not wanting to be held. So, try putting them down on their stomach to enjoy tummy time. You could prop their head and body up with a blanket, or just let them enjoy being on the soft blanket, gazing around at their surroundings.

When feedings and diaper changes fail, try some of the tricks to help soothe your little one and create a world of peace, safety, and serenity!
The post 6 Ways to Calm a Crying Baby first appeared on Bright Beginnings Preschool.
