Fall is here and we are so excited to dive into the seasonal fruits and veggies that our dear mother
nature provides for us! Apples are one of our favorite treats as they seem to be extra yummy this time of
year. Our teachers have already used the first days of fall to work apples into many aspects of their
lesson plans. For our young birdies, apples can provide activities in color (red, green and gold) and shape
(circles and stars) recognition. Also, apples are a great art medium to be used for stamping! Here is a
quick list of ideas that you can do with your own birdie for great fall fun!
- Roll them Apples are a great way to teach your younger birdies the concept of rolling and that round objects roll. You can have apple races with your older guys by rolling the apples down a hill!
- Stamp with them Apples are super fun to use artistically. Cut them in half (right down the
middle to reveal the star) and dip them in any paint (even a combination of primary colors to
create a beautiful “surprise” color!) to create their own autumn masterpieces! This can be done
inside or outside (depending on the breeze.)
- Sort them! Grab different sets of apples and corresponding bins to help your birdies learn the basics of sorting!
- Identify Shapes with themGrab your birdies and apples and identify the various shapes that
apples form as you cut them (circle, star, triangle wedge). For added fun, you can cut other shapes into apples as they are soft and flexibleQ!
- Eat them!Grab one of each kind at your local grocery store (or even better farmer’s market!)
and taste each kind with your birdies! See which ones they loved and the one’s that they did not care for too much! Talk about the difference in taste of the apples.
